Cefn Rofft

Posted by Nick Burton on Saturday, July 25, 2015, In : Other horse-drawn work
Cefn Rofft is an ancient smallholding near Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in Denbighshire.  It is designated as a SSSI because of the unimproved grasslands but it is gradually being invaded by bracken from the surrounding woodlands.  I was contacted by Natural Resources Wales to undertake bracken bashing for the owner.  The main concern was to control the bracken in order to preserve the rare greater butterfly orchid which have increased greatly in number since the SSSI was first designated.

Harrowing at home

Posted by Nick Burton on Thursday, March 5, 2015, In : Other horse-drawn work
As February closed it was a last chance to get our fields harrowed.  Some dry and slightly frosty mornings allowed us to get that done without too many hoof marks.

The Breidden

Posted by Nick Burton on Sunday, July 27, 2014, In : Other horse-drawn work
Last week Elza and I completed our third year of bracken rolling at the Breidden SSSI.  Early starts and early finishes were the order of the day so that we could get as much done before the blazing sun overheated us both.  Beck snapped this using Hipstermatic as I went to get Elza one morning.

Clearing Knucklas Castle

Posted by Nick Burton on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, In : Other horse-drawn work
This one was a bit of a first for Elza and I, instead of normal horse logging (if there is such a thing) we were dragging whole trees across the castle mound at Knucklas.  We spend three days moving hawthorn scrub trees that had been cut from the mound to an old quarry site where volunteers from the Knucklas Castle Community Land Project were cutting the trees up for firewood and to burn the brash.  On the Saturday we were lucky to see a "double header" steam train using two locomotives to pu...

Bracken control

Posted by Nick Burton on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, In : Other horse-drawn work

On 1 January 2013 it will become illegal to use the bracken-control chemical Asulam.  The chemical, which was sold as Asulox, was banned by the EU on 31 December 2011 but those who already had stocks had a year to use these up. While good in small areas, as it provides cover for animals, bracken can be a real problem, quickly becoming a monoculture, shading out and eliminating wild plants and flowers.Landowners are now considering their options, the main alternative...

Bracken rolling

Posted by Nick Burton on Sunday, September 2, 2012, In : Other horse-drawn work
I just completed five days bracken rolling on Breidden Hill, Powys, a SSSI and the site of Rodney's Pillar.  As it was the school summer holidays and, for a change, the weather was pretty good on four of the days, Elza drew quite a lot of public interest.  People stopped to watch, asked questions and, when we were on a break, had the chance to come and say hello to Elza.  One very nice chap, named Tony Beardsell, asked if he could take some photos and very kindly emailed them through to me - ...

Rolling, rolling, rolling

Posted by Nick Burton on Monday, May 14, 2012, In : Other horse-drawn work
After all that rain and now it has dried out a bit, I thought I would have a go at rolling one of the fields at Ceunant.  I know I should have walked behind but I just couldn't resist using the hitch-cart and Elza pulled both with ease.  In all it took just over two hours to complete the job and, at least for a while, the field had nice stripes!
